Fish Traveler Guide Service, Eagle Lake Fishing Report for Sunday, October 24, 2010

Howdy Folks,

Well the weather has been all over the map this week. Monday and Tuesday it was sunny and flat, calm and the best (and almost only) bite was from 6:45 to 9:00 AM for us. Wednesday morning was the same until about 9:30 A.M. when the wind began to blow from the west. And, it is still blowing today, (Sunday).

Since Wednesday morning we've had winds 10-15 MPH with gusts 25-30 MPH. Today's fishing charter was cancelled due to high winds and rain. The wind and rain are supposed to back off early this coming week and temperatures are forecasted to be in the 50's during the day and 30's at night. This is what October Fishing Weather at Eagle Lake is supposed to be like.

And yes, the fishing has been affected. Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday morning, we had bright sun and flat, calm water and I couldn't find feeding fish in shallow water (10 feet deep or under). We caught our fishing during this weather pattern fishing water 10-20 feet deep with our trolled baits set at 4-6 feet deep. The best bite was between 6:45 and 9:00 A.M.

As stated above, the wind began to blow Wednesday and, by mid-morning the weather cooled and things changed. Once the weather cools, the water temperatures follow suit and Eagle Lake's water surface temperatures cooled down to 52-54 degrees. Thursday morning I went back to shallow water (under 10 feet deep) to look for the fish. The wind had roiled and discolored the water making it pretty much not worth fishing. It also scattered the Tui Chub bait schools and the fish. As a result, since Thursday, we've had to look around quite a bit for areas holding feeding fish.

Trolling:
In spite of the weather conditions, limit and near limit fishing is available for those anglers willing to brave the elements. Sep's watermelon, orange and brown grubs produced fish this week for trollers. With the wind blowing strongly from the west, we are trolling with the wind pretty much at "wind speed" with our grubs set from 2-5 feet below the surface in water 7-20 feet deep. The best trolling areas are on the west side of the lake between Shrimp Island and Pelican Point. The "slot" between Pelican Point and Browns Point at the tip of the Youth Camp is also producing fish. The average fish we put in the box this week was 2.5lbs with our biggest fish weighing in at 3lbs 1oz. The fish are fat with "nice shoulders" on 'em. Many of the larger males we are catching are showing off their spawning colors and hooked jaws.

Bobber Fishing:
The fish have also moved around for the bobber fishermen. However, those anglers that are pulling their anchors and moving until they find willing fish are catching limits. The good news is that the weather has been cloudy since Thursday morning this past week so the bobber bite has lasted well into the morning hours.

The best bobber fishing areas have been on the west side of the lake between Shrimp Island and Pelican Point. Anchor up off the points in 10-12 feet of water and cast in towards the shoreline with your threaded crawler set at five feet deep.

Launching:
Launching is no problem at the Spalding Launch facility.
