Fish Traveler Guide Service, Eagle Lake Fishing Report for Sunday, November 28, 2010

Howdy Folks,
Well, this is my last report for 2010. I will be in touch over the off-season via email if anything regarding Eagle Lake comes up that is worth mentioning. Thanks for your support this year. It has been great meeting many of you readers of my reports up here at Eagle Lake during your fishing and vacationing trips. It is very cool to have a complete stranger approach you and say "thanks for the help". I thank all of you back.

I am moving back to Granite Bay, Ca (Sacramento area) for the winter. You can reach me via email or my cell phone number 916-201-4648.

Current Conditions:
As of this date, the north and middle basins are iced up; the Spalding Launch included. The south basin is ice free for shore fishing and you may even be able to drag a small aluminum boat in down there. Guys fishing from shore off the Gallatin Jetty and Pikes Pt area are catching fish. I don't have anything more specific than this to report.

If I may ask, please put your thoughts together for an abundant winter up here. We need the lake level to come up, way up.

Best Regards,

Tim Noxon

Howdy Folks,
Great fishing weather all week and very good fishing to go along with it. The weather has been as cool as the high teens at night and low forty's during the day, but most days this past week it has been night time temps in the high 20's and day time temps in the mid to high 40's. We've had overcast weather most mornings and sometimes all day long resulting in an almost all-day-bite. The word is out on the good fishing up here at Eagle Lake and folks are showing up to take advantage of it. Almost every day this past week the Spalding Launch Ramp parking lot area was loaded almost to capacity. Folks were showing up in the afternoon, launching their boats, and in by dark with limits of Eagle Lake Trout.

Trolling:
We fished this week inside Pelican Pt with orange grubs in water 6-10 feet deep with our trolled grubs set at 3-6 feet deep. As mentioned above, the bite lasted well into the morning and even afternoons, especially when we had cloud cover.

Note: (and this is just my opinion) Find water that is at least 40 degrees F to fish. The bite in cooler water, in my experience, is much slower. Currently you can find that water temperature closer to and south of Pelican Point, as well as off the Youth Camp shoreline.

Most days we had 8-15 hookups before putting an average fish in the box of around 3lbs. Our biggest fish this week were a 4lber and 3lb 8ozer caught on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively.

Bobber Fishing:
Those opting to bobber fish should do so off the Youth Camp Shoreline. Set up in 12-20 feet of water. Set your threaded night crawlers at 5 feet below the surface. Lower the depth of your night crawler all the way down to three feet off the bottom as the morning progresses. If this does not do it, GO TROLLING. The trolling is really good right now.

Launching:
Launching is no problem at the Spalding Launch facility WITH THE FOLLOWING EXCEPTION:

the launch ramp is very icy most mornings. Take your time. Even 4 wheel drive vehicles can slip. CHAIN UP, IT WORKS. After you launch your boat, as you pull your trailer out of the water, pause to let as much water as possible drain off your trailer and back into the lake, not onto the launch ramp where it will freeze up and compound the icy ramp problem.

Fish Traveler Guide Service, Eagle Lake Fishing Report for Sunday, October 31, 2010

Howdy Folks,
The weather pretty much cooperated for the fishermen this week at Eagle Lake. Early in the week we had fairly windy conditions. (Not too windy to fish.) This was beneficial in that it blew a lot of the surface weeds out of the good trolling areas.

The best trolling areas this week were at the north end of the lake, between Bucks Point and Little Truxel Point, all the way up to Big Truxel Point. Many anglers are also fishing the area between the Youth Camp and Pelican Point and northwest towards Rocky Point. Surface water temperatures in these areas is 45-49 F.

Trolling:
We fished Sep's watermelon and orange grubs 2-5 feet deep on down riggers in 6-10 feet of water for daily limits of Eagle Lake Trout this week. Seemed like the fish moved around daily but were in the same general vicinity as the day/day's prior. We stayed within a general area and never moved more than a 1/2 mile in any direction. We are launching at 6:45 A.M. and fishing by 7:00 A.M. Normally we've boated limits by 10-11:00 A.M. This week the fish we put in the box were between 2.5 and 3.3lbs. We are getting closer to a 3lb average keeper.

Note: The water clarity varies in different areas of the lake. Orange is a good color for "cloudy" water.

Bobber Fishing:
Bobber fishing is good off the Youth Camp shoreline and along the west side from Pelican Point down to Shrimp Island. The fish are close to shore so anchor up in water 10-15 feet deep and fish threaded night crawlers under a slip bobber at 5-8 feet deep. And, do it early.

Launching:
Launching is no problem at the Spalding Launch facility.

Fish Traveler Guide Service, Eagle Lake Fishing Report for Sunday, October 24, 2010

Howdy Folks,

Well the weather has been all over the map this week. Monday and Tuesday it was sunny and flat, calm and the best (and almost only) bite was from 6:45 to 9:00 AM for us. Wednesday morning was the same until about 9:30 A.M. when the wind began to blow from the west. And, it is still blowing today, (Sunday).

Since Wednesday morning we've had winds 10-15 MPH with gusts 25-30 MPH. Today's fishing charter was cancelled due to high winds and rain. The wind and rain are supposed to back off early this coming week and temperatures are forecasted to be in the 50's during the day and 30's at night. This is what October Fishing Weather at Eagle Lake is supposed to be like.

And yes, the fishing has been affected. Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday morning, we had bright sun and flat, calm water and I couldn't find feeding fish in shallow water (10 feet deep or under). We caught our fishing during this weather pattern fishing water 10-20 feet deep with our trolled baits set at 4-6 feet deep. The best bite was between 6:45 and 9:00 A.M.

As stated above, the wind began to blow Wednesday and, by mid-morning the weather cooled and things changed. Once the weather cools, the water temperatures follow suit and Eagle Lake's water surface temperatures cooled down to 52-54 degrees. Thursday morning I went back to shallow water (under 10 feet deep) to look for the fish. The wind had roiled and discolored the water making it pretty much not worth fishing. It also scattered the Tui Chub bait schools and the fish. As a result, since Thursday, we've had to look around quite a bit for areas holding feeding fish.

Trolling:
In spite of the weather conditions, limit and near limit fishing is available for those anglers willing to brave the elements. Sep's watermelon, orange and brown grubs produced fish this week for trollers. With the wind blowing strongly from the west, we are trolling with the wind pretty much at "wind speed" with our grubs set from 2-5 feet below the surface in water 7-20 feet deep. The best trolling areas are on the west side of the lake between Shrimp Island and Pelican Point. The "slot" between Pelican Point and Browns Point at the tip of the Youth Camp is also producing fish. The average fish we put in the box this week was 2.5lbs with our biggest fish weighing in at 3lbs 1oz. The fish are fat with "nice shoulders" on 'em. Many of the larger males we are catching are showing off their spawning colors and hooked jaws.

Bobber Fishing:
The fish have also moved around for the bobber fishermen. However, those anglers that are pulling their anchors and moving until they find willing fish are catching limits. The good news is that the weather has been cloudy since Thursday morning this past week so the bobber bite has lasted well into the morning hours.

The best bobber fishing areas have been on the west side of the lake between Shrimp Island and Pelican Point. Anchor up off the points in 10-12 feet of water and cast in towards the shoreline with your threaded crawler set at five feet deep.

Launching:
Launching is no problem at the Spalding Launch facility.

Fish Traveler Guide Service, Eagle Lake Fishing Report for Sunday, October 17, 2010

Howdy Folks,
The weather has still been a factor up here at Eagle Lake. Early in the week it was too nice. We need night time temperatures in the low 30's to get the trout on the bite in the morning hours. Last Sunday and Monday, October 10 and 11, the air temperatures were 45 and 48 respectively, at 6:00 A.M. when we launched. The fishing was extremely slow both days. Wednesday, October 12 the temperatures dropped and the fishing began to pick up.

The best bite is still early. We have caught limits for the boat since Thursday, 10-14 with the most solid bite from 6:45-9:00 A.M.

Trolling:
The best trolling areas include the Youth Camp shoreline and between Wildcat Point and Pelican Point on the west side. We are also catching fish near the mouth of the opening to the north basin. Best baits have been watermelon and pumpkin seed grubs. We are trolling them 4-6 feet deep in 6-12 feet of water. There are definitely bigger fish mixed in with our average 2.5lb Eagle Lake Trout. Our biggest fish this week was 3lbs, 9oz taken at 5 feet deep on a grub.

Fish Traveler Guide Service, Eagle Lake Fishing Report for Sunday, October 3, 2010

Howdy Folks,
Last week I reported that fishing up here at Eagle Lake had slowed down due to the very warm weather pattern we were experiencing. The weather pattern brought temperatures in the high 80's during the day and low to mid-40's at night. This has lasted the entire past week and really scattered the trout. Prior to the warm weather, many fish had moved north into shallow water where we were "on 'em".

Today the weather finally changed. We have light rain and wind. The bite was really back on today with many anglers taking early limits of Eagle Lake trout to 3lbs in shallow water.

Trolling:
The weather forecast is for continued cooling, with day time temperatures in the high 50's and night time temperatures in the high 30's for the coming week. I expect the "shallow water trolling pattern" to kick back into high gear. Troll water 10 feet deep or under with watermelon, pumpkin seed, or brown grubs. The weather is expected to be cloudy all week so the bite shouldn't be limited to just the early morning hours.

The best trolling areas include the Youth Camp shoreline and between Wildcat Point and Pelican Point on the west side.

Bobber Fishing:
Same story. Bobber fishing picked right back up today. The best report for bobber fishing was anchored off the Youth Camp in 15-20 feet of water with threaded night crawlers set at 7-15 feet deep.

Launching:
Launching is no problem at the Spalding Launch facility.

Fish Traveler Guide Service, Eagle Lake Fishing Report, September 28,2010

Howdy Folks,

Howdy Folks,
Well, I guess the fishing had to slow down sometime, and it did. The Eagle Lake Trout REALLY went off the bite beginning last Thursday, September 23. Up until then it was limits of very nice sized fish daily. For example, last Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday we had limits of Eagle Lake Trout that averaged 21/2 lbs. On Wednesday the combined weight of the six fish we kept was 16lbs, with a 3lb, 7oz fish the big fish of the day.

On Thursday two things happened. The moon was full and the weather changed back to a very warm, summer pattern which has continued through today. No wind, calm water, night time lows in the low 40's, day time highs in the high 80's. This has put the fish way off the bite. Although the moon is waning, the summer-like weather has not changed and is not due to change until this weekend. I expect the bite to get good again once the weather changes back to a fall-like pattern.

Trolling:
"Find minnows and you will find feeding fish." That statement was true until the conditions changed as described above. The minnow schools are moving around and the Eagle Lake Trout are not feeding in shallow water as they have been for the last month. We are catching fish in shallow water but half as many for twice the time on the water. Fish the west side in water 8-10 feet deep early in the morning. We are launching at 6:00 A.M. and fishing by 6:30 A.M. Troll Sep's watermelon, frog green, or watermelon grubs at 5 feet deep on a down rigger 150 feet behind your boat or use a side planner. Pumpkin seed and orange grubs have also produced fish. After the sun is on the water move out to 20-25 feet of water and fish 15-20 feet deep with the same baits. The Youth Camp shoreline and along the west side of the lake between Pelican Pt and Shrimp Island are good areas to troll.

Bobber Fishing:
Same story. Bobber fishing has slowed down. The Youth Camp shoreline had been producing well and is still loaded with minnows, but the fish do not seem to be interested in feeding in this area.

Launching:
Launching is no problem at the Spalding Launch facility.

Monday, September 20, 2010

Howdy Folks,

Howdy Folks,
This report is a repeat of last week's. The fishing is very good. We are limiting daily with nice fish averaging 2.5lbs. We are also averaging one to two 3lb fish per outing so the bigger fish are starting to show.

Trolling:
Find minnows and you will find fish. I've been concentrating my efforts on the west side of the lake between Pelican Pt. and Shrimp Island, where we are finding fish feeding on schools of minnows. I've gotten reports from successful anglers, also fishing minnow schools, on the east side of the lake off Camp Ronald McDonald, at the south end off Christie Campground, and inside Spalding Bay behind Pelican Pt. Fish are being caught in all of these areas. With the abundant minnow schools, the bite can and will last well into late morning and early afternoon.

We are fishing water 8-10 feet deep with pumpkin seed grubs, and Sep's amber, watermelon, or brown grubs. We are trolling them at 5 feet deep over an uneven bottom (structure). I usually fish this type of water even when minnows are not prevalent. With Tui Chub minnow schools holding in the same areas, this makes your chances of catching fish that much better. Surface water temperature is now 62. It will continue to decline and more and more Eagle Lake Trout will move northward into shallower water.

Bobber Fishing:
Same story as trolling, find minnows and you'll catch fish bobber fishing. The Youth Camp is loaded with minnows and a good bet for bobber fishing. Anchor up in 12-18 feet of water and set your threaded night crawler at 7-10 feet deep.

Launching:
Launching is no problem at the Spalding Launch facility.

Worth Mentioning:
Darrah Springs Hatchery is planning to stock the remainder of this year's bonus fish on September 21 at Rocky Point. (The first half of this year's bonus fish were planted in May of this year, prior to the opener.) As of this week the fish are averaging 2.8 pounds each. These bonus fish are made possible with the funds generated during the Project Eagle Lake Trout Fundraisers that take place in the community of Spalding each year on the Forth of July and Labor Day Weekends.

Fish Traveler Guide Service, Eagle Lake Fishing Report for Sunday, September 12, 2010

Howdy Folks,
The fishing is good. We had limits of Eagle Lake Trout every trip out this past week. The fish we are putting in the box are averaging around 2.5 lbs. We are catching 1-2 fish per outing that are 3lbs or pushing 3lbs. Some days the bite is hot right from the get go. Other days you have to work for them.

Definition of "work for them":

1. Obviously, if you caught fish in a spot the day before, go back there. Cover the area thoroughly. Before you leave, change baits, change colors of the baits that got you fish the day before. This is KEY. Look at the water. The water clarity may have changed. The fish may be there, but they can not see your trolled baits. Change to brighter colors. Orange is a good color. Add something to your bait to make it more visible. i.e. troll a grub behind an Uncle Larry's spinner.

2. Move to other "similar" spots, i.e. if you are fishing shallow structure, move to areas that offer similar, shallow structure. The west side of the south basin of Eagle Lake offers many such areas. (between Pelican Pt. and Shrimp Island)

3. Stay in the same area you caught fish in but move out to deeper water. Often the fish will be nearby, but in deeper water.

Some days this week we caught a fish every 15 minutes. Other days we caught a fish every 1/2 hour. Stay with it and you should catch your limit.

Trolling:
I used my own advise as stated above to catch fish this week. I moved around a lot, however we caught most of our fish in similar water conditions; 8-10 feet of water with our trolled grubs set at 4-6 feet deep, 150 feet behind the boat. Sep's #2 watermelon, orange, brown, and amber grubs were the top producers. Other anglers have been trolling Tui Chub flies (olive/white) or brown flies with good success. Biggest fish I heard weighed in this week was 3lbs, 8ozs caught south of Pelican Pt on the west side.

The fish are loaded with Tui Chub minnows. There are abundant schools of them all over the lake at this time. You can see them on the surface from your boat. The Pelicans and Grebes are feasting on them along with the trout. I caught 80% of our fish this week fishing in and around these bait schools.

Bobber Fishing:
Bobber fishing slowed down this week. The last day of good bobber fishing was Sunday, Sept 5 when pretty quick limits were the rule, early off the Youth Camp. The rest of the week Bobber Fishing slowed in this area. Most folks are now trolling.

Launching:
Launching is no problem at the Spalding Launch facility.

Fsh Traveler Guide Service, Eagle Lake Fishing Report for Monday, September 6, 2010

Howdy Folks,
Most days this week the fishing was pretty solid. Those anglers who know where to fish and what to use caught got limits of Eagle Lake Trout. The night time temperatures are staying fairly cool. More and more trout are moving northward and many fish are being taken trolling and bobber fishing off the Youth Camp and along the west shore line south of Pelican Point.

Trolling:
Many anglers are taking two fish limits fishing shallow water off the Youth Camp shoreline trolling Sep's brown, amber or watermelon grubs a 5-7 feet deep. Work water 10 feet deep in tight to the shoreline early. Move out from the shoreline as the sun hits the water, but, leave your baits at 5-7 feet deep. There are millions of Tui Chub Minnows in this area and they are near the surface so the trout are too.

Across the lake on the west side, south of Pelican Point, troll the same grubs mentioned above from 2-6 feet deep in 8-20 feet of water. We had limits on my boat every day we were out this week using this method. On this side of the lake there are fewer minnows and the trout are feeding more off the bottom on snails. We see this from the stomach contents of the fish we clean caught in this area. Most fish this week averaged 2.5 lbs. We are catching two to three 3lb fish a week from these areas. If you are not catching fish using the baits mentioned above, troll a night crawler.

Bobber Fishing:
The best bobber fishing I've heard about is EARLY off the Youth Camp shoreline. Anchor in 15 feet of water and set your night crawler at 5-7 feet deep.

Launching:
Launching is no problem at the Spalding Launch facility.

Fish Traveler Guide Service, Eagle Lake Fishing Report for August 30, 2010

Howdy Folks,

Well we have been pretty spoiled up here at Eagle Lake the past six weeks or so. The weather pattern had been SOLID and so was the fishing. For days and weeks we were fishing the same areas and depths with consistent success=limits of Eagle Lake Trout. Several things occurred beginning with the week of Aug16, that changed up the fishing:

Night time temperatures began to drop into the low 40's and high 30's. This caused the Eagle Lake Trout to start thinking about their fall, northward migration to shallower water to fatten up for the winter. (many fish are actually on the move northward)

The wind began to blow hard. This scattered the bait schools (Tui Chub Minnows) that the trout have been heavily feeding on.

The moon got FULL. So far this season at Eagle Lake, the full moon hasn't really put the damper on the fishing. This time it did.

Summary: The Eagle Lake Trout are not biting as well in the areas and at the depths we have been catching them at for the last six or so weeks.

Trolling:
Miners Bay, Shrimp Island and Wildcat Point are still fair to good for trolling. Anglers are still catching fish from the surface down to 30 feet on Sep's #2 watermelon and brown grubs. Night crawlers are a good bet too for trolling. As mentioned above, the fishing is not as hot as it had been.

Now for some good news: A good number of fish have migrated northward. We have been catching them in shallow water all the way north to Pelican Point. This is not a red hot bite, but we scratched out limits Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. We were trolling the grubs mentioned above at six feet deep in water 8-15 feet deep. We had fish to 2lbs, 14oz, with the average fish we put in the box around 21/4 lbs. I expect this fishing to get better and the size of the fish to increase.

Where will I fish this next week? It all depends on what the weather does. The report for the week of Aug 30 is for warming daytime temperatures. However, the night time temperatures are predicted to hover around 39 to 44 degrees. I will start my trolling day in shallow water as mentioned above. I will be fishing water 8-14 feet deep along the west side from Pelican Point down to Slough Point. If the bite is good I will stay in this area. If it slows after the sun hits the water I will move to deeper water further south off Pelican Point on the west side or Miners Bay on the east side of the lake and set my trolled baits at 8-30 feet deep.

Bobber Fishing:
Bobber fishing, like trolling had been very consistent. However, like the trolling, it slowed down. With the weather warming back up, it could turn back on. The bobber fishermen have to follow the fish like the trollers, so it might be to move to shallower water. Up until this past week, bobber fishermen were finding consistent fishing anchoring in 50-60 feet of water off Miners Bay and setting their threaded night crawlers at 25-30 feet deep.

Launching:
Launching is no problem at the Spalding Launch facility.

Fish Traveler Guide Service, Eagle Lake Fishing Report for Sunday, August 1, 2010

Howdy Folks,

The bite is hot! Most knowledgeable anglers are taking pretty easy limits. One the east side of the lake, out in front of Miners Bay, the Eagle Lake Trout are on a great bite. The bite is not only first thing in the morning. Those anglers that are hitting the water at the crack of 7:30 A.M. are still catching good numbers of fish. These are nice solid fish from 2-31/4 lbs. The Tui Chub Minnows are starting to show up in the area and the stomach contents of the Eagle Lake Trout are showing that they are beginning to feed on the minnows.

Trolling:
Troll water 50-60 feet deep off Miners Bay. Those with downriggers, set your baits at 30 feet deep. For those trolling leadcore, use 4-5 colors. Troll around one mile an hour. Best baits include Sep's #2 Watermelon grubs, night crawlers, and red/gold or red/white spoons. The Tui Chub Minnows are starting to show up on the surface in the area. If you see concentrations of minnows, raise one of your trolled baits up to 4-6 feet below the surface and troll "around" the minnow school, not through it. The trout just might be feeding on the minnow school, just below them.

Bobber Fishing:
Bobber fishing has been very, very good for those fishermen that fish EARLY in the same areas mentioned above. Set threaded night crawlers below a slip bobber at 30 feet deep.

Launching:
Launching is no problem at the Salding Launch facility.

Fish Traveler Guide Service, Eagle Lake Fishing Report for Sunday, July 25, 2010

Howdy Folks,
No report sent Sunday, July, 18.

Transition time appears to be over. The Eagle Lake Trout seem to have arrived in the areas of the lake where they will spend the warmer summer months. We have adjusted our fishing methods to give 'em what they want at new water depths and new locations around the lake.

Surface water temperature has risen to 74 degrees. Trollers are catching fish consistently at 25-30 feet deep. Bobber fishermen are also finding good success with nightcrawlers set at 30 feet.

Trolling:
The best trolling for this past week has been on the east side of the lake in water 50-60 feet deep. Sep's #2 Watermelon grubs have again, moved into the drivers seat as the best grub. Hardware-wise, try hot orange/gold or red/gold spoons. Troll both the grubs and spoons at 25-30. Best trolling areas are the Miners Bay area and further south from there off Eagles Nest.

Fly Fishing:
Still catching good numbers of fish fly fishing this week in 12 feet of water, believe it or not. Good numbers = 10+ fish per rod per day.

Bobber Fishing:
Bobber fishing has been very, very good for those fishermen that fish EARLY. I had a grandpa and three grandsons this week. I don't usually bobber fish but I took this crew and we had a ball with multiple hook ups and quick action. Bobber fishing is best in 50-60 feet of water with nightcrawlers set at 25-30 feet below the slip bobber. Best areas to fish are anchored up off the east shoreline of the lake near Miners Bay and off Eagles Nest.

Launching:
Launching is no problem at the Salding Launch facility.

Fish Traveler Guide Service, Eagle Lake Fishing Report for Sunday, July 11, 2010

Howdy Folks,
It is transition time. The Eagle Lake Trout are on the move. One day you'll catch them in one spot, the next day ZERO. The surface water temperature is approaching 70 degrees. The shallow water bite that has been so good since the season opened on May 29 MAY be about to end...who knows??

Having stated the above, the fishing action was pretty solid this past week. Larger fish, 2-3+lbs, are still being caught EARLY in shallow water. Smaller trout, 1-1.5lb, are being taken by trollers later in the morning.

We are starting to see Tui Chub minnows in large numbers under the docks at the Spalding Launch Ramp. These minnows will supply a large part of the Eagle Lake Trout diet in the coming months.

Trolling:
Trolling has been best early on the west side of the lake from about 1/2 mile south of Pelican Pt. all the way down to Wildcat Pt. Troll your baits 150 feet behind the boat in 8-12 feet of water from the surface down to 5-6 feet deep. Fishing these water depths will take you pretty close into shore. This inshore bite will usually taper off after the sun hits the water. When this occurs, move out to 30-50 feet of water and troll your baits from 6-12 feet deep. The deeper water bite is best from Shrimp Island down to Wildcat Pt. Best trolled baits are Sep's #2 watermelon grubs. Other anglers report that green Needlefish are also producing fish.

Fly Fishing:
Fly fishing is still really good. I fly fished twice this week with excellent results. When fly fishing we always catch and release.

Bobber Fishing:
Bobber fishing has been good for those fishermen that fish EARLY. Shrimp Island has been producing for the bobber fishermen. They are anchoring in 15-20 feet of water and setting their threaded night crawlers 8-10 below a slip bobber.

Launching:
Launching is no problem at the Salding Launch facility.

Fish Traveler Guide Service, Eagle Lake Fishing Report for Sunday, July 4, 2010

Howdy Folks,
The weather continued warm this past week but the fishing continued to be good for those anglers on the water early. We are launching at 4:30 A.M. and dropping our lines in the water by 5:00 A.M. The surface temperate on the west side of Eagle Lake where we are concentrating our trolling efforts is around 65-67 degrees but the fishing remains good, EARLY.

Trolling:
We are still catching nice fish fishing shallow. We are still trolling in 8-15 feet of water with our baits set at 5-6 feet deep on the down riggers. Watermelon grubs are still producing. Black and orange trolling flies were also good this week. The fish should start moving to deeper water soon but we will continue to work this shallow water bite as long as possible.

I've heard that other successful anglers are trolling various spoons, (frog-green seems to be working) in water from 30-50 feet deep. They have caught fish from 12-18 feet deep down rigging the spoons. They are trolling in Miners Bay and the east shoreline north of Eagle's Nest.

Bobber Fishing:
Same story as last week. Limits are very possible for those bobber fishermen on the water early. They are anchoring in 15-20 feet of water and setting their threaded night crawlers 8-10 below a slip bobber. The best bobber fishing that I've heard of is on the west side below Shrimp Island.

Launching:
Launching is no problem at the Salding Launch facility.

Project Eagle Lake Trout:
The 4th of July Weekend "PELT" Fundraiser was held on Saturday, July 3, at the Eagle Lake R.V. Park in the Spalding Community. All funds generated are targeted for the enhancement of the Eagle Lake fishing experience.

Monday, June 28, 2010

Howdy Folks,
I had to go to Sacramento late last week and over the weekend so here is what happened according to my sources with regards to lake conditions and fishing.

The weather really warmed up up here this week. Surface water temperature rose from 60 to 64 degrees. We also had a lot of algae scum on the surface which made trolling tough in some areas. The days were bright and sunny with little wind.

With this change in the weather pattern, the fishing pattern began to change also. The "bite window" became shorter in some areas. Fish are still being caught in shallow water, 8-12 feet deep trolling baits 5-6 feet deep. Once this bite turns off, move out to 12-25 feet of water. I'd still troll at least one bait at 5-6 feet deep and move the others down to 8-12 feet deep.

Trolling:
With the warm weather and flat calm days, the water is heating up fast and the fish are on the move from the north and mid basins to the the deeper, cooler south basin of Eagle Lake. We had been fishing off the "Broccoli Tree", just south of Pelican Pt on the west side. This bite had turned to a "hit and miss" situation. A more consistent shallow water bite can be found on the west side south of Shrimp Island in 8-12 feet of water. Early is best. After the sun is on the water, move out to deeper water as mentioned above. Trollers are still catching fish on Sep's #2 watermelon grubs. Also catching fish this week were #6 or #8 orange trolling flies. In deeper water fish were also caught on frog green needle fish.

I did fly fish Monday and Wednesday and we caught and released fish on #14 and #16 orange scuds. Pretty good mornings both days with around 20 fish to the boat each day. We missed quite a few strikes too, both days.

Bobber Fishing:
As mentioned above the fish are transitioning so "good one day, not so hot the next". Bobber anglers were catching fish off the Youth Camp shoreline and still are but they are not limiting easily every day. Another good bobber fishing location
is the Shrimp Island area.

Launching:
Launching is no problem at the Salding Launch facility.

Fih Traveler Guide Service, Eagle Lake Fishing Report for Sunday, June 20, 2010

Howdy Folks,
Solid fishing again this past week. We had overcast skies and choppy conditions on the water through Wednesday, June 16. Fishing through Wednesday was great with an all morning bite due to the cloud cover and good chop on the water. On Wednesday afternoon, the skies cleared, the wind died, and the temperatures rose. The early morning bite on Thursday was just that, early, and only early. The same was true for Friday. The water was like glass by 7:30 A.M. and the bite was tough for the rest of the morning both days.

I have moved up my departure time from the dock from 5:00 to 4:30 A.M. to allow for more fishing time before the sun rises. If the forecast calls for no wind and bright, cloudless skies, the premium fishing time for both trollers and bobber fishermen on Eagle Lake will be from first legal fishing time (around 4:30 A.M.) until 7:30-8:00 A.M.

Trolling:
I continued to fish the west side of the lake this week where the fish are feeding heavily in shallow water, especially early. We are working water from 8-12 feet deep, trolling our baits 4-6 feet deep on downriggers, 150 feet behind the boat. The best baits this week were, again, Sep's #2 Watermelon Grubs. Many folks are having very good success trolling flies. Orange and olive green have been good colors for the trolling flies.

The average size of the fish this week was 17-20 inches. These fish weigh in between 2 and 2.75 lbs. They are bright silver on the outside and bright red on the inside, great table fare.

Bobber Fishing:
Same story here. Bobber fishing has been good for those fishermen that fish EARLY. Shrimp Island Point and off the Youth Camp shoreline have been producing for the bobber fishermen. They are anchoring in 15-20 feet of water and setting their threaded night crawlers 8-10 below a slip bobber.

Launching:

Fish Traveler Guide Service, Eagle Lake Fishing Report for Suday, Jun 13, 2010

Howdy Folks,
I reported last week that fishing at Eagle Lake was very good. Move that up a notch. It was pretty close to outstanding this past week. Even with two days of pretty tough winds, Thursday and Friday, the Eagle Lake Trout bite didn't turn off or even slow down much.

The surface water temperature warmed to 56-57 degrees this week. The trout moved closer to shore in greater numbers and the first light to 8:00 A.M bite really got going.

Trolling:
I am still fishing the west side of the lake from Slough Pt. down to Wildcat Pt in water 8-20 ft. deep. Previous to this week, I had been "looking around" in shallow water to see if the the fish have moved in yet. We had been catching about half our fish in "tight" and half out in deeper water later in the morning. This week there was no need to move out of the shallow water as the fish moved in and stayed in until late morning.

We were successful this week trolling our baits 150 feet behind the boat from the surface down to 8 feet deep. Our most consistent bait was a Sep's #2 Watermelon Grub. (If you are fishing out of your own boat, bring your own watermelon grubs because they sell out fast up here.) The size of the fish also improved a little this week. We had several fish that were 19-20 inches and three lbs plus. As they have been since the opener two weeks ago, the Eagle Lake Trout being checked in are healthy, bright silver and fat.

Bobber Fishing:
Nothing to report. Trolling is very good and most folks are taking advantage of it at this time.

Launching:
Lauching is no problem at the Salding Lauch facility.

Fish Traveler Guide Service, Eagle Lake Fishing Report for Sunday, June 6, 2010

Howdy Folks,
The fishing at Eagle Lake continued very good this past week. We had limits of Eagle Lake Trout every day except Friday, June 5, when the wind pretty much blew everybody off the the lake.

The surface water temperature ranged from 52-55 degrees this week. Although we are catching fish in fairly shallow water, the fish have not shown up in the "shallows" (under 10 feet of water) in any great numbers yet. The fish seem to be scattered all over the lake at this time. As the water warms, more and more fish should move into shallower water where we will be waiting.

Trolling:
Trolling in tight to the shoreline on the west side, south of Shrimp Island continued to be very productive this week. We are working water 10-16 feet deep over a rocky, uneven bottom. We are setting our trolled baits from just below the surface to 6 feet deep and runnig them 125-150 feet behind the boat. Brown and watermelon 2 inch Sep's grubs were the top producers this week. The bite has been best from about 5:00 A.M. to 9:00A.M. Our average fish this week was 17-19 inches in length, weighing in at 2 to 2.5 lbs. The fish are fat, bright silver, and healthy.

Other sccessful trollers are catching fish in Miners Bay, the Youth Camp, Pelican Pt., and Wildcat Pt. Many are catching fish fishing shallow in deep water; i.e. trolling from the surface down to about 6 feet deep in water that is 45-50 feet deep.

Bobber Fishing:
Bobber fishermen have had good success anchored up off the Youth Camp shoreline. Anchoring in 15-20 feet of water and setting a threaded night crawler below a bobber at 7-8 feet deep has been productive.

If you have any questions or if I can be of any assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Fish Traveler Guide Service, Eagle Lake Fishing Report for Saturday, May 29, 2010

Howdy Folks,

Opening Day, 2010, fishing on Eagle Lake was very solid for most anglers. There was a little wind, creating a light chop on the water, so the bite stayed with us all morning. With the surface water temperature hovering between 49-50 degrees in most areas of the lake, the fish were scattered. The "key" was to move around until you found a concentration of fish. Once they found fish, most trollers were successful using their preferred methods and baits. Those anglers that didn't "look around" were not as successful in filling out their limits of Eagle Lake Trout.

On my boat we moved twice before we found a concentration of fish to work. We ended up south of Pelican Pt. on the west side of the lake in 12-14 feet of water. Here we trolled Sep's amber and brown grubs at 6-8 feet deep on down riggers 125 feet behind the boat. The action was not red hot but the area produced a bite or hook up about every 10-15 minutes, enough to keep us interested. Between 6:30 and 9:30 A.M., we boxed 7 Eagle Lake Trout between 2-3.5 lbs out of this area. We also lost a fish at the boat and missed several other strikes.

Several times I trolled in closer to the shoreline, into 6-8 feet of water where I like to set my trolled baits a foot off the bottom. Nothing! The fish were biting in deeper water about half way between the surface and the bottom.

Other methods and locations that produced fish on opening day:

*Off Black Mt trolling north and south with Rainbow Runners, 6-10 feet deep.
*Trolling east and west between Gallatin Beach and Wildcat Pt, Sep's watermelon grubs.
*Shrimp Island, trolling flies, top 10 feet of water.

The stomach contents of the fished I cleaned was very encouraging. First, the fish were very healthy, bright, silver footballs. They were completely loaded with snails and a few minnows. I know this was only day one of the season, but it appears the food chain at this point is abundant.

Launching at the Spalding Launch Ramp was no problem. The launch area was dredged last November and the water depths between the launch ramp and the lake's main body is 3.5-5 feet deep and wide enough for two boats to navigate simultaneously in either direction.

As mentioned above, we landed fish on our boat between 2-3.5 lbs. The biggest fish I heard weighed in on the opener was 4.2 lbs.

If you need help, info, or if I can answer any questions on camping, RVing, or fishing at Eagle Lake, please do not hesitate to contact me.
