Fish Traveler Guide Service, Eagle Lake Fishing Report, September 28,2010

Howdy Folks,

Howdy Folks,
Well, I guess the fishing had to slow down sometime, and it did. The Eagle Lake Trout REALLY went off the bite beginning last Thursday, September 23. Up until then it was limits of very nice sized fish daily. For example, last Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday we had limits of Eagle Lake Trout that averaged 21/2 lbs. On Wednesday the combined weight of the six fish we kept was 16lbs, with a 3lb, 7oz fish the big fish of the day.

On Thursday two things happened. The moon was full and the weather changed back to a very warm, summer pattern which has continued through today. No wind, calm water, night time lows in the low 40's, day time highs in the high 80's. This has put the fish way off the bite. Although the moon is waning, the summer-like weather has not changed and is not due to change until this weekend. I expect the bite to get good again once the weather changes back to a fall-like pattern.

Trolling:
"Find minnows and you will find feeding fish." That statement was true until the conditions changed as described above. The minnow schools are moving around and the Eagle Lake Trout are not feeding in shallow water as they have been for the last month. We are catching fish in shallow water but half as many for twice the time on the water. Fish the west side in water 8-10 feet deep early in the morning. We are launching at 6:00 A.M. and fishing by 6:30 A.M. Troll Sep's watermelon, frog green, or watermelon grubs at 5 feet deep on a down rigger 150 feet behind your boat or use a side planner. Pumpkin seed and orange grubs have also produced fish. After the sun is on the water move out to 20-25 feet of water and fish 15-20 feet deep with the same baits. The Youth Camp shoreline and along the west side of the lake between Pelican Pt and Shrimp Island are good areas to troll.

Bobber Fishing:
Same story. Bobber fishing has slowed down. The Youth Camp shoreline had been producing well and is still loaded with minnows, but the fish do not seem to be interested in feeding in this area.

Launching:
Launching is no problem at the Spalding Launch facility.
