Fish Traveler Guide Service Fishing Report for Eagle Lake, CA

Howdy Folks,

We had a spell of warm, mild weather move back into the area this last week. Daytime temperatures warmed up to the low 70’s with no wind at all for several days. Fishing was pretty good this week IF you were fishing in the right spot for the EARLY MORNING BITE. After that, fishing got tough. By the end of the week, the fish had almost deserted the shallower areas of the lake and moved back to deeper water.

Trolling: We caught most of our fish this week in water 10 feet deep or less, fishing 5 feet deep on the downriggers. Orange or white, #2or #3 Sep’s Grubs trolled 125-150 feet behind the boat was the ticket. As mentioned above, the weather warmed, no wind cooled the lake and freshened up the water, and the fish moved out of shallow water. Although we had no problem catching and releasing 8-12 fish a day early in the week, late in the week with the warmer conditions the fishing got tough.

Our biggest fish this week were right at 3.5 lbs. We are starting to see more and more snails in the stomach contents of the trout, indicating they are feeding in fairly shallow water and fattening for winter.
Bobber Fishing: Bobber fishermen have also moved back to deeper water and are again anchoring in water 40-50 feet deep and dropping threaded night crawlers under a slip bobber down to the 25 foot level.

Launching:

Spalding: The dredging operation at the Spalding Launch Ramp gets underway this coming week.

I have my boat moored in a slip at the Spalding launch facility, however there are many boats launching and retrieving here daily. With your engine elevated for propulsion, you will churn up mud and probably drag the bottom of your boat as you leave and return to the launch ramp. The best bet is to rent a slip from one of the three operators here in Spalding for your stay so you only have to launch and retrieve your boat one time. If you choose to launch and retrieve daily, have your passengers meet you out on one of the boat slip platforms where they can board your boat after you launch.

Eagle Lake Marina/Gallatin Beach: I have not seen the operation here personally, but I understand from my sources that the launching here has been improved by joining together numerous sections of mooring docks, along which one can “walk” his boat in and out to deeper water.
